Tips for a Smooth School Year

Sweet summertime is coming to an end. Teachers are sharpening up their pencils, and kids everywhere are clinging to their last days of summer vacation. The return to school can be quite a dramatic experience. Whether your little ones are excitedly awaiting that first bell or they’re full of butterflies, preparation is key to a successful school year. We’ve talked to the experts (parents!) and compiled a list of their best tips to prep the kiddos for a great year!

Tips for a smooth transition back to school

  • Start enforcing early bedtimes and wake up times a few days in advance to get the tiny humans used to the schedule.
  • Plan to be at the bus stop 15 minutes early the first week or so. The bus schedule is typically a little out of whack that first week!
  • Grab a copy of The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, Ruth E. Harper, and Nancy M. Leak for any little ones who may be feeling a bit anxious about starting school for the first time.
  • Consider doing a back-to-school run through morning! Enforce an early bedtime with backpacks packed and an early wake-up. Have them run through each step of the morning routine: a quick breakfast, dressing, ensuring they have everything they need, and walking to the bus stop (or practice driving to school). This helps take away any anxiety about their first day and makes them feel much more confident when they have to do it for real! To celebrate a successful run through–instead of going to school, take them on one last fun, special outing.

Tips for a smooth school year

  • Use a sweater organizer to lay out outfits for the week. This eliminates the time-consuming meltdown in the mornings, and it allows your littles to take responsibility for getting dressed on their own.
  • Make sure their book bags are packed with all the necessities from the night before.
  • Prep make ahead breakfasts like overnight oats, this overnight sausage egg bake, or these delicious quick and easy banana-oat muffins.
  • Prep snacks, lunches, and water bottles from the night before. Want to take things to the next level? Consider organizing your fridge like this to encourage the youngins to take responsibility for preparing their own lunches!
